Harry Potter 8

(Poem 245 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

When Harry dropped the resurrection
stone in the forest after conferring with
his lost loved ones, the imagery was
reminiscent of the Garden of Gethsemane
and the agonizing acceptance of death
as the only way to life for all of humanity.
To have the power to save yourself and
choose submission to pain and fear of
the unknown is a most noble sacrifice.

Harry Potter 7

(Poem 244 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

This time what struck me was
the intimacy of Hermione and
Harry’s friendship as young
adults trying to endure hardship.
They leaned on each other for
support and inspiration and
literally for survival in dire times.
To have even one friend you
would trust with your life and vice
versa is a miracle, yet this story
depicts those depths of friendship
as the norm…what an aspiration.

Harry Potter 6

(Poem 243 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

Severus’s mother was the magical
being he wished he could be named
for instead of his Muggle father whose
surname he got stuck with—Snape.
To hate your own blood, or any part of
yourself is a curse that can only lead
to misery and misfortune for the bearer.
I suppose he had that in common with
Tom and Hitler, and who knows how
many other evil people who throughout
time have wanted to root out others
because they despise their own roots.

Harry Potter 5

(Poem 242 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

I paid closer attention to Kingsley Shacklebolt
this time through the Order and found myself
wishing for more of his story, especially knowing
that he eventually became the Minister of Magic.
Not only does he look quite kingsly, but he is in
the inner circle of Dumbledore’s most trusted
friends, a fierce protector of Harry, and brave
in combat against multiple evil villains repeatedly.
We would be about the same age in real life.
He is a man I would love to meet could he step
from the pages and sit with me for a cup of tea.

Harry Potter 4

(Poem 241 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

I think what I noticed most this
time around the Goblet of Fire
was just how good a young man
Cedric Diggory was depicted as.
He was the lad every girl would
want to bring home to meet the
parents and the British version
of the quarterback All-American—
a man’s man, rugged good looks
and charm, kind to everyone and
if he could be so effortlessly killed,
what did that say for everyone else?

Harry Potter 3

(Poem 240 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

Scabbers lived the good life
for 12 years with the Weasley
family, a suspiciously long
time for a rat with teenage
boys for primary caretakers.
Enemy of Crookshanks for
false accusations of ratricied,
motivation for Sirius to flee
Azkaban after spotting him,
found in Hagrid’s cabin where
he hid like the coward he is,
an Animagus whose unforgivable
betrayal created orphans of
too many children to count.

Harry Potter 2

(Poem 239 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

Sneaky, sneaky little red-head
naughty girl, how did I not notice
you before with your guilty looks
and furtive glances as you wrote
with Tom in your evil journal?
As many times as I’ve watched
this movie, I’ve never noticed
the full-grown adult man who
slipped the diary into your books,
and started you down the dark
path that nearly cost you your life.

Harry Potter 1

(Poem 238 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

This time around, what struck me most
was how utterly alone Harry was before
finding his family and place at Hogwarts.
A boy of 11 should not have to bear the
cruelty he endured at the hands of his
neglectful relatives in the cupboard under
the stairs at 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging.
Told his whole life he’d amount to nothing
and best make himself scarce, then told
he’s famous, the boy who lived, a magical
miracle admired and marveled at by all,
is enough to warp the mind and heart.
Yet, this little boy is willing to face any
enemy, that others might live without fear.

The Wand Chooses the Wizard

I have always wondered why Hermione was placed in Gryffindor. She is clearly a Ravenclaw. Then I started thinking about the fact that I am Ravenclaw despite wishing to be Hufflepuff. The sorting hat must have known she needed Harry and Ron more than other smarty-pants people surrounding her. There are the people we are, the people we want to be, and the people we can become given the right influences and circumstances.

I let this blogsite get cancelled a while back because I did not have available funds to pay for it. Thankfully, when I was able to return, my information and domain name were still available. I was not so lucky with my other publishing website. I have to start over from scratch on that one.

But I feel okay about it all. A fresh start might give me a fresh perspective and kick me into gear with my self-publishing journey once again. It is NanoWrimo time and I have a great novel idea. I have moved to a a multi-generational home and quit teaching. I am focusing on my health and now have more time and energy to devote to my passions.

Would I have expected to be here if anyone had asked me a decade ago? Absolutely not. I could not have planned to be sorted into the family or house I am currently enjoying. Nor could I have foreseen the two ladies with whom I would be sitting here watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I found them through a chain of events I did not orchestrate.

Perhaps things come to us when and if the time is right if we are open to their arrival. We have to put in the footwork and be willing to accept the call, but maybe forces beyond our control are working on our behalf. I know it sounds a little woo-woo, especially when things are not going smoothly in life. And I may not feel this way when the next storm hits. However, it feels nice to think my wand has chosen me, that great things are in store, and just the right friends and family are by my side to battle the darkness.

Goblet of Fire

If the Goblet of Fire

spits out your name

expect to face dragons

and battle sea creatures

You’re doomed if you do

and doomed if you don’t

for the game is rigged

and no one really wins

Contenders end up in a

graveyard of darkness

Save who you can

as you fight for your life

because you will face

suffering greater than any

you have ever known

Persist through the mazes

of self-doubt and despair

Stay true to your values

remember your friends

Speak truth to oppressors

stare down the barrel

of hatred’s unrepentance

to earn peace in the end

This poem was written during a Harry Potter marathon with my friend Debbie M. while watching the fourth movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
