Austin Grind

(Poem 196 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

My grind began with driving  
my grandfather to the hospital,
then trying to find a coffee shop
where I could set up and work.
The first big chain location
was full of people like me with
their laptops open on tables,
steaming cups of coffee at
each elbow, the essential
fuel that powers commerce.
Siri found me another option,
and she did not disappoint.
Austin Grind welcomed me
with open arms, an empty
table, tea, and a tasty scone.
Later, at lunch time, a chicken
panini hit the spot to keep me
nourished, comfortable, and
working steadily on my hot-
spot until time to rescue my
grandfather from his ordeal.
Five stars, first class, top notch,
superb, blue-ribbon, stellar,
as reviewed by this remote
worker who will be sure to
revisit next time I need a safe,
inviting space with good food
and tea for the daily grind.

Laundry

(Poem 169 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

The conundrum of laundry is constant
with eight people in the house every day.
Someone will forget to clean the dryer vent,
and for that a lecture will come my way.
Some use scents to make their clothing smell nice,
while others prefer unscented and pure.
Three different soaps add up to quite a price,
but it is worth it for peace, I am sure.
Sometimes a person forgets to unload
their washer or dryer causing dismay,
as others in line now find their turn slowed
and possibly pushed to another day.
Eventually, all laundry gets done;
clean clothes is the victory we have won.

(Poem 153 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

Let’s go ahead and
start the meeting
since we’re 3 minutes
past and we want to
respect your time.
We need to be flexible,
be prepared to pivot,
and accept that
this is a new norm.
We are going to be
rolling out the new task,
so we have to
shift directions
because, as always, the
requester determines the focus,
and in order to
meet the expectations,
you’ll need to respect the
importance of the workflow.
Due to internal deadlines
that will continue to
vary by task,
I may have to give you a non-answer.
I will never say no to more resources,
but I have to say that
I can’t speak to the assumption.

I am going to have to

because we all know

New York David

(Poem 129 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

Selfie by David Marshall 5/8/24.

New York David is decisive.
He attends business meetings
and lunches with clients and
visits rose gardens simply to
see the sights as a tourist.
New York David stays in hotels
and spends evenings at bars
being someone’s wingman.
He’s an expert in a field I do
not fully understand the
particulars of, nor do I want
to invest the energy to
understand because life is
too short…all I know is that
New York David has planes to
catch and important matters
to settle and will be home
Thursday with his suitcase
and weariness ready to
turn back into Texas David who
lounges in pajamas at home
with his wife and dogs.
