The Women of House of the Dragon

(Poem 229 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

The women of this world
create a complicated
kaleidoscope of mothers
and sisters who must
begrudgingly tolerate the
men who share their space.
From the bawdy pirate queen
with her many wives and
loyal crew of rowdy marauders,
to the gentlest soul Helaena,
unwilling to harm another,
but unafraid to speak the truth.
From the queen who ever was,
whose unwavering hope inspires
a new world of dragon riders,
to the queen who agonizes
over the decision to sacrifice
her own flesh and blood for
the sake of a kingdom of peace.
From the Lady who searches
the moors and her soul for the
dragon she believes is destiny,
to the White Worm who knows
the underbelly of hunger and
thirst and clawing her way from
the trench to the castle better
than most can begin to fathom.

Vermithor and Silverwing
bond with dragonseed;
bastard-born means
nothing to monsters who
breathe fire and only calm
to the ancient tongue.
Smallfolk dare dream large
in hopes of claiming what
birthright they are owed.

Seasmoke has spoken
without words, choosing
a rider for himself from
the Velaryon lineage.
His Addam is a first
among men in that he
was sought out by the
beast and selected for
the bond, plucked from
the sea of obscurity his
illegitimacy destined.
The gods are as wise as
they are capricious.

“…no war so bloody as a war between dragons.” -Rhaneys Targaryen

Brother betrays brother
in airborne battle astride
gods in the form of dragons.
Perhaps a wiser head could
tame the madness and set
things straight with the rash
youth whose lust for power
outpaces both decency and
justice, but alas, even she
cannot withstand death by
fire when both dragon and
warrior’s time has come.
Peace to Meleys and Sunfyre.

Impossible Peace  House of the Dragon

The Hatfields and McCoys-like family feud
that was the Brackens and Blackwoods
paled in comparison to the bodies used
for fodder by those fighting for the throne.
The Dance of Dragons has begun in earnest,
despite the unspoken awareness by all that
bloodshed of kin by kin is a most appalling
form of violence to the gods of their ancestors.
While the men gnash their teeth, and their
dragons chomp at the bit, the women kneel
before alters of stone lighting candles and
whisper of impossible peace, the intent of
kings, and the wishes for undoing wrongs.

The mother does what
any mother must do after
receiving the worst news
imaginable; she mounts
her dragon and flies as far
as she must for confirmation
with her own eyes that her
son has been taken from
this world in a vicious attack.
She must reckon with the
knowledge that all could
have been prevented by
her every step of the way,
so she has herself to blame
for her baby ending up in the
belly of the enemy’s beast.
A son for a son will become
the battle cry that brings
only blood to the realm.
Winter is truly coming.

Tuesday at Three

Tuesday at Three
is our time for tea,
our standing engagement,
my dragon and me.

Once per week,
we let the leaves steep
and whisper the secrets
the two of us keep.

We laugh and cry,
eat pickles and rye,
stir cream and sugar,
and share some pie.

He’s never dressed,
and that’s the best
because he eats so much
he needs room to digest.

We always say
we’re going someday
to surprise the locals
at the nearest buffet.

But if we did,
we’d end up amid
a crowd of onlookers;
heaven forbid.

We’d rather meet
at our little retreat
where friendship and gossip
make tea time complete.
