(Poem 281 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

His mama was a ninja
who went by different names.
She rescued anyone in need,
without hope of gains.
His mama was a ninja,
good with knives and swords and fists,
but she also made the best katsu curry
and gave lovely handmade gifts.
His mama was a ninja
who could scale any wall
and dance across a roof peak
with no risk of a fall.
His mama was a ninja,
a fierce protector cloaked by night,
so he grew up to believe in justice
and always fight for what’s right.

(Poem 203 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

By starlight she scales the walls
to right the wrongs of evil men,
fully masked, cloaked by night,
emboldened by years of inequity.
A virgin widow determined to
defend the oppressed and forlorn,
she must fight her own instincts
by day and bide her time under
the withering weight of custom.
A knight for the suffering meek,
a flower who must learn to bloom.

(Poem 151 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

My opossum Joey Koey
is a secret ninja at night.
He goes on special missions
guided only by moonlight.
When we’re all asleep,
safe resting in our beds,
he’s off saving the world;
we’re scratching our heads.
How does he get out of
his kennel all on his own?
How does he get the jobs?
Does he talk on my phone?
Who out there needs saving
by an adorable marsupial?
His ministrations are sincere;
he’s persistent and dutiful.
I’m sure he has his reasons
for sneaking around and all,
for using his claws and tail
to make sure he doesn’t fall.
I have to trust he knows what
he’s doing and will be alright,
while I sleep safe and sound in
my bed and he’s out all night.
