The Lost Bookshop (Book Review)

I loved the ideas and interwoven timelines that crossed generations, countries, and realities in The Midnight Library by Evie Woods. It is magical, mythical, fairy tale-ical (I made up that word), and beautiful. It is so beautiful that my main complaint is that I wanted more. The first half of the book is deeply fleshed out, letting us into the characters detailed inner lives and minute by minute adventures. The second half of the book feels rushed, almost like it should have been several more books in a series so the author could have gone deeper into the story lines and better tied together the threads she was so masterfully weaving.

I want to know so much more about the eccentric elderly woman Martha works for. Martha’s childhood is left untapped, so much potential for background to show how she might find herself trapped in such a terrible marriage. Her mother signs and does not speak, which opens the door to so many questions that could be answered and scenes that could be elaborated on. The events that occur around the World War II timeline are barely mentioned and could be so many chapters of fascinating detail. Giant chunks of time are skipped over that could be filled with story. And some of the puzzle pieces like the tattoos, living bookshelves, missing manuscripts, and love affairs feel like fragments that could be such an epic saga were we to have their stories told in many more chapters.

It would make a fabulous series on a streaming service, especially if they fleshed out more of the characters, their backgrounds, motivations, and dynamic growth. One thing is for certain; Woods does a great job of creating protagonists I want to root for, women who never give up no matter how many times they get knocked down.

Rock Climbing?

(Poem 324 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

AI is unsure why a woman
would attempt to climb
the side of a cliff,
but best efforts to produce
an image result in
laughable camera poses
much more leaning back
toward the chasm than anyone
would be comfortable with
hands in the air all willy-nilly
instead of clinging to protrusions
like her life depends on it
just hanging out in the air
without a care in the world
maybe she’ll get to the top
maybe not, who knows?

Angry at the Storm

When the world
is crumbling
and the anger
has bubbled so far
up inside
that it has nowhere
else to go
face the storm
the raging winds
the turbulence
and oppression
and unleash the primal
scream that calls forth
the ancestors
the broken ones
those who have waited
as patiently as a predator
for their power
to be sought
and there will be
a reckoning.

Are You the One

(Poem 253 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

Bandits and warriors,
dukes and commoners,
servants and generals,
guilds and entrepreneurs
all managing to thrive and
survive amidst less than
ideal circumstances.

Little does anyone suspect
that a bodyguard in male
garment could actually be
a woman equipped to
both protect and transport
with confidence and success.

Neither does anyone believe
that a modest, unassuming
girl, who is not the most
beautiful in the land, deserves
to be revered for her patience
and intelligent approach to life.

One is a business woman,
a free thinker, every bit as
capable as any man she
meets, a martial artist, a
wife, a loving granddaughter,
a faithful supporter of those
who care for the needs of
the people—Princess.

The other is an undervalued
girl who is mistreated by
her family, disrespected
by her sisters, seen as a
pawn by her father, but
who loves fiercely, holds
fast to kindness and hope,
and persists by the side of
the emperor with a gentle
unmatched grace that lifts
her to her rightful place
with honor—Empress.

The Women of House of the Dragon

(Poem 229 for 2024 – I am writing a poem a day)

The women of this world
create a complicated
kaleidoscope of mothers
and sisters who must
begrudgingly tolerate the
men who share their space.
From the bawdy pirate queen
with her many wives and
loyal crew of rowdy marauders,
to the gentlest soul Helaena,
unwilling to harm another,
but unafraid to speak the truth.
From the queen who ever was,
whose unwavering hope inspires
a new world of dragon riders,
to the queen who agonizes
over the decision to sacrifice
her own flesh and blood for
the sake of a kingdom of peace.
From the Lady who searches
the moors and her soul for the
dragon she believes is destiny,
to the White Worm who knows
the underbelly of hunger and
thirst and clawing her way from
the trench to the castle better
than most can begin to fathom.
